JIS Screwdrivers

JIS Screwdrivers – You what?!

Have you ever wondered why normal phillips (PH) screwdrivers don’t seem to fit PH screws correctly on Japanese bikes?

Maybe you’ve seen many Japanese bikes with chewed PH screws and wondered why.

The reason for this? They’re not PH. They’re “JIS B 1012”.

JIS stands for ‘Japanese Industrial Standards’, and the JIS B 1012 was designed to prevent ‘Camming out’ of screwdrivers on tight screws. PH screwdrivers can easily damage these screws.

I’m no engineer, so other than the fact that JIS screwdrivers fit JIS screws, and PH fit PH screws, I can’t really tell you any more than that, other than how to identify them.

JIS B 1012 screws can be identified by a ‘Dot’ or a small cross next to the familiar X design of the screw.

So – Why does this post exist? because I’ve had some bought for me for Christmas and I’m over the moon about it, I’ve been meaning to pick some up for a while, and now I don’t have to!

Chuffed. To. Bits.
